France Hijab Ban on 2024 Olympics August 2024 - Mariam's Collection

France Hijab Ban on 2024 Olympics August 2024

France: “We can’t breathe anymore. Even sports, we can’t do them anymore” . Violations of Muslim women’s and girls’ human rights through hijab bans in sports in France........

As preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics move forward, the French Olympic Committee has announced a "groundbreaking" new rule: banning athletes from wearing headscarves during competition. This ban has sparked widespread debate, especially among those athletes who see their headscarves as a vital expression of their culture and faith. The rule seems particularly “considerate” of these athletes.

According to the French Olympic Committee, one of the goals of this ban is to “ensure the neutrality” of the games, because, evidently, the presence of headscarves might “disrupt” the purity of the competition. How exactly do they disrupt? Perhaps because they’re too eye-catching, possibly distracting the audience, or maybe because they might be seen as a “political” or “religious” statement.

However, for those who wear headscarves, this rule is a source of deep confusion and frustration. For many female athletes, wearing a headscarf is not just a matter of cultural or religious expression; it is a symbol of their identity. At an event as global as the Olympics, the headscarf should be part of how they showcase their multifaceted identity, not something to be forcibly taken away.

“Banning French athletes from competing with sports hijabs at the Olympic and Paralympic Games makes a mockery of claims that Paris 2024 is the first Gender Equal Olympics and lays bare the racist gender discrimination that underpins access to sport in France,” said Anna Błuś, Amnesty International’s Women’s Rights Researcher in Europe.

“Discriminatory rules policing what women wear are a violation of Muslim women’s and girls’ human rights and have a devastating impact on their participation in sport, blocking efforts to make sports more inclusive and more accessible.”

“No policymaker should dictate what a woman can or cannot wear and no woman should be forced to choose between the sport she loves and her faith, cultural identity, or beliefs,” said Anna Błuś.

Supporters argue that the headscarf ban is intended to "protect" the secular nature of the Olympics. However, this ban only reveals one truth: in the attempt to maintain "neutrality," the real casualty is the inclusivity of diverse cultures. Athletes who insist on wearing their headscarves are compelled to “choose” before the world—not only to excel on the field but also to surrender to an unfair rule on a spiritual and cultural level.

In facing such challenges, the voices of these female athletes deserve to be heard, and their dilemmas understood. The spirit of the Olympics is meant to promote global peace and unity, yet this ban seems to take us in the opposite direction. It sends a message to the world that certain cultures and beliefs are not welcome on the playing field.

There are some reviews extracted from our forum can express our feelings:

They talk about equality in clothing and the freedom to wear whatever you want UNTIL it comes to hijab. A way to express identity and personality. Respect to every other religion except when it comes to the Islamic faith? Everyone deserves to feel comfortable competing in whatever clothing they choose to wear, whether it be shorts or a bikini or pants or a hijab, everyone should be respected no matter their beliefs and who they are

A piece of cloth doesn't stop anyone from playing any sport or doing anything for that matter. If the hijab is banned for no reason at all, why don't we just ban shoes. They might carry weapons 🤔

I’ve come to a troubling realization : the world talks a lot about “ women rights “ and “ liberation “ but it seems to only apply to non-Muslim women. Muslim women, who choose to cover their bodies, most frequently face discrimination and criticism and aren’t seen as equal as expressing themselves freely. On the other hand, it’s perfectly acceptable for other women to wear whatever they want or even to go naked if it’s their choice. This double standard is really frustrating and makes me question the reality of western society. Even though they claim to be progressive and civilized, there’s a lot of underlying racism and Islamophobia. It’s the harsh truth we need to face and address.

Oh! roaming naked outside is okay but if a woman adds a piece of clothes to her outfit, it makes them uncomfortable. Wow the peak of hypocrisy 👏🏻....and what about freedom n feminist? If women wear modest clothes by choice is okay but if women wear modest clothes by choice is oppressed n not acceptable..Oh God!

Lol, they're fine with lgbqt+ and all about accepting but modest wear is banned 😂

The fact that a government is even able to make a decision like this in 2024 breaks my heart. I for one cannot even imagine what it must feel like to be told what to wear and what not. Even though racism towards muslim women is definitely present in the Netherlands I consider myself extremely lucky being able to wear my hijab freely. We should NEVER judge nor decide these things for a woman. Just like we shouldn’t judge women for what they were wearing when they got raped.. I feel extremely confident in my hijab and love the way I look when I wear it. When can we start being happy for women making their own decisions and stop judging them for everything they do. Modern day feminism should be about us wearing whatever we want whenever and wherever we feel like it! Whether that’s a hijab or a mini skirt and tank top. To all my beautiful women out there who struggle with these laws. May Allah swt keep you safe and support you through this hardship. Please be patient for things will get better eventually In Shaa Allah. Our entire Ummah thinks of you and we love you akhawaat, stay strong 🤍

As a French muslim boxer, can’t hide how frustrated I was when I decided to wear hijab and learned that I couldnt continue competitions because of a personal choice. The feeling of being left out of the game, your performance being reduced to your hijab, it hurts. So sad to hear that the country of liberty and equality keeps you away from your work, your passion… Sport should be a fundamental right, they are clearly saying « You can do sport, but stay away from success ». It hurts them to see successfull Muslim women, to see how strong we are. We should be considered as normal athletes, with respect, dignity. Hope this would change one day.🌟 May Allah bring us peace.🤍

For those who wear headscarves, their faith, culture, and identity still deserve respect and recognition. Perhaps in pursuing "fairness," the French Olympic Committee should also consider whether true fairness requires understanding and embracing diversity.
